MATHEMATICS

Mathematics is a beautiful subject which has its own unique place in the curriculum at Harper Bell Seventh-day Adventist Primary School. It provides learners with powerful ways to describe, analyse and change the world. Children can experience a sense of awe and wonder as they solve a problem for the first time, discover a more elegant solution and make links between different areas of mathematics.

At Harper Bell we use the White Rose Maths Hub scheme of work as the starting point for our mathematics curriculum.

In short, our Mathematics curriculum:

  • has number at its heart. A large proportion of our time is spent reinforcing number to build competency. We passionately believe that all children should have an in depth understanding of place value and the four main operations.

  • ensures teachers stay in the required key stage and support the ideal of depth before breadth. Our teachers work at such a pace that ensures a deep understanding of each concept is secured before they move on to a new mathematical skill.

  • provides plenty of time to build reasoning and problem solving elements into the curriculum. Not only do our children learn a skill, but they are also given opportunities to apply it and therefore demonstrate their true understanding of a concept.

Our Mathematics Curriculum:

  • White Rose Maths Hub

  • Mastery of skills; depth over breadth

  • Higher focus on number

  • Concepts are taught using concrete, pictorial and abstract methods

At Harper Bell we always aim to make our curriculum and teaching innovative and engaging. With this in mind, we teach multiplication facts via song and rap alongside Pride of Britain winner NK.

Evidence of Impact on Pupil Learning

Ofsted - September 2018

Senior leaders have taken swift action to improve teachers’ subject knowledge in mathematics.

Mathematics lessons have a structure that provides daily opportunities for pupils to practise and refine calculation skills and to solve mathematical problems.

In 2018, pupils’ attainment in mathematics was above the national average at the expected standard.
