British Values at Harper Bell

At Harper Bell Seventh-day Adventist School, we actively promote the fundamental British Values of Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance. These values sit naturally alongside our Christian ethos and our commitment to Love, Learning and Laughter, helping our pupils grow into kind, responsible and confident members of their community.
Democracy
We teach pupils that everyone's voice matters. Children are given meaningful opportunities to share their views, make choices and contribute to school life through pupil leadership, pupil voice activities, class discussions and wider school decision-making.
The Rule of Law
Pupils learn why rules and laws are important in keeping people safe and ensuring that everyone is treated fairly. Our school expectations, including The Harper Bell Way, help children understand the importance of responsibility, positive choices and appropriate consequences.
Individual Liberty
We encourage pupils to become confident, independent learners who feel able to make their own choices within a safe and supportive environment. Children learn that they have rights and freedoms, while also understanding their responsibility to respect the rights of others.
Mutual Respect
Respect is at the heart of life at Harper Bell. We teach children to value themselves and others, to listen carefully to different viewpoints and to treat everyone with kindness, dignity and compassion. This reflects our Christian belief that every person is precious and should be treated with love.
Tolerance and Acceptance
Our diverse school community is something we celebrate. Pupils learn about different faiths, cultures, traditions and ways of life and are encouraged to appreciate what makes each person unique. We teach children to challenge prejudice and discrimination and to recognise that differences enrich our school and wider society.
British Values are not taught as a stand-alone idea. They are woven throughout our curriculum, collective worship, personal development programme, pupil leadership opportunities, behaviour expectations and everyday relationships. Through these experiences, we aim to prepare every Harper Bell pupil to participate positively in life in modern Britain, while living out our school values and showing love, respect and service to others.
