Enhancing Learning at Harper Bell

At Harper Bell Seventh-day Adventist School, we are committed to providing a curriculum that is ambitious, inclusive and designed to give every pupil the knowledge, skills and character they need to thrive.

We are continually enhancing and extending our curriculum offer so that learning is rich, memorable and purposeful. Our aim is not only for pupils to achieve well academically, but also to know more, remember more and be able to do more across the full breadth of school life. We are focused on high-quality curriculum and teaching, strong achievement over time and pupils building secure foundations for later success.

Our Curriculum Vision

We want every child at Harper Bell to experience:

  • A broad, well-sequenced and knowledge-rich curriculum
  • High expectations in every classroom
  • Learning that builds over time and supports long-term memory
  • Meaningful opportunities to apply learning in real contexts
  • An inclusive education that enables all pupils, including disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND, to succeed
  • Wider experiences that develop confidence, character, aspiration and wellbeing

How We Are Strengthening Our Curriculum Offer

1. Strengthening classroom learning

We are refining teaching so that learning is carefully sequenced, expectations are consistently high and lessons help pupils secure important knowledge over time. We are focusing on strong foundations, clear routines for learning, effective questioning, retrieval practice and purposeful assessment so that pupils are supported to make progress across the curriculum.

2. Extending learning beyond the classroom

We want pupils to benefit from a rich set of experiences that broaden horizons and develop talents and interests. We provide access to opportunities that broaden experiences and develop talents under personal development, this includes building a core enrichment offer including civic engagement, arts and culture, nature and outdoor learning, sport and wider life skills.

At Harper Bell, this means creating more opportunities for pupils to take part in:

  • Educational visits and themed enrichment days
  • Arts, music and performance opportunities
  • Sporting events and physical development activities
  • Outdoor and environmental learning
  • Pupil leadership and service opportunities
  • Community partnership projects
  • Workshops, visitors and curriculum enhancement experiences

3. Promoting inclusion and equity

We are committed to ensuring that curriculum enhancement is available to all pupils. Our approach is rooted in high expectations, high challenge for all, careful support and a determination that background or barrier should never limit opportunity.

4. Supporting personal development and wellbeing

Our curriculum is designed to support pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development alongside their academic growth. We want pupils to become thoughtful, responsible and compassionate young people who are ready for the next stage of education and life.

5. Working strategically to improve

Enhancing the curriculum is part of our wider school improvement work. At Harper Bell, this means we are:

  • Reviewing and strengthening curriculum plans
  • Improving consistency in teaching and learning
  • Developing enrichment opportunities term by term
  • Working with external partners to extend experiences for pupils
  • Evaluating impact so that improvements lead to better outcomes and experiences

What This Looks Like for Pupils

Through our enhanced curriculum offer, pupils will increasingly have opportunities to:

  • Deepen their subject knowledge
  • Revisit and retain important learning
  • Experience learning in real and meaningful contexts
  • Develop confidence in speaking, performing, leading and collaborating
  • Take part in activities that broaden aspiration
