History at Harper Bell SDA Primary School
At Harper Bell SDA Primary School, History is taught with the aim of inspiring pupils to become curious, creative thinkers who develop a rich understanding of local, national and global history. We want children to gain the confidence to think critically, ask meaningful questions and analyse historical evidence with increasing independence. Our curriculum encourages pupils to explore significant events, people and changes over time, helping them understand how the past has shaped the world they live in today.
Implementation
Curriculum Design: History is taught through a half‑termly programme of study using the Kapow scheme. Topics are carefully sequenced so that knowledge and disciplinary skills build progressively from year to year.
EYFS Learning is delivered through Understanding the World, where children begin to explore past and present, people, culture and communities.
Key Stage 1 Pupils study significant individuals and events within living memory, developing early enquiry skills and an understanding of simple chronology.
Key Stage 2 Children explore key historical periods in greater depth, making connections across time and subjects such as geography, science and literature.
Approach Each lesson includes a clear disciplinary focus to support pupils in thinking like historians. Learning is enriched through the use of artefacts, educational visits and opportunities for digital research.
Inclusion Scaffolded tasks, adaptive teaching and digital accessibility tools ensure all pupils can access and engage meaningfully with historical enquiry.
